What is Spinal Fusion?

Spinal fusion is a well-established surgical technique that permanently joins two or more vertebrae using bone grafts or implants. This procedure eliminates painful movement between vertebrae, stabilises the spine and prevents further nerve damage. Performed by expert spinal surgeons at Vithas, our partnered hospital meets the highest international healthcare standards.

Questions about this Treatment

Spinal fusion can be a very good treatment for some spinal conditions; however, it does not return your spine to “normal” as the normal spine has some degree of motion between vertebrae. To improve the chance of fusion being successful, some surgeons may use screws and connecting rods to secure the bones. Spinal fusion may be performed for a variety of different reasons including:
  • Lumbar spinal stenosis
  • Lumbar degeneration (wear and tear) of the spinal structures leading to narrowing of the spinal canals
  • Lower limb radiculopathy and neurogenic claudication
  • Treatment of fractured (broken) vertebrae
  • Correction of deformity
  • Scoliosis
  • Spondylolisthesis – a condition whereby one of the vertebra in the lower part of the spine slips forward or backward compared to the next vertebra
  • Elimination of painful movement
  • Treatment of instability
  • Treatment of some disc herniations or bulge
The immediate discomfort following spinal fusion is generally greater than with other types of spinal surgery. Fortunately, there are excellent methods of pain control available for after your surgery and your anaesthetist and nurse will work closely with you to manage your pain.
  • Initial consultation (in London or online) with our spinal specialist
  • Comprehensive review of your medical history and scans
  • Personalised treatment plan created by your surgeon
  • Scheduled surgery date at our partnered Vithas hospital

Your procedure will be performed under general anaesthesia by our team of specialist spinal surgeons who have extensive experience in complex fusion operations. The surgery typically takes between two to four hours, depending on the specific complexity of your case. Our surgeons employ precision surgical techniques using the latest spinal instrumentation to ensure accurate vertebral alignment and stabilisation. The bone graft material used to facilitate fusion will be carefully selected, either harvested from your own hip bone or using advanced synthetic alternatives, with the choice tailored to your individual needs and the surgeon's expert recommendation.
While uncommon, may include:
  • Blood clots (minimised through early mobilisation)
  • Infection (prevented with strict sterile protocols)
  • Temporary discomfort at graft site
Throughout your recovery at our Alicante facility, you'll have access to 24/7 medical support from our dedicated nursing team and specialists. Your rehabilitation begins immediately, with physiotherapy starting the very day after your surgery to promote safe mobility and begin rebuilding strength. Most patients require a hospital stay of four to six days, during which you'll receive daily reviews from your consultant to monitor progress and adjust your care plan. Before discharge, you'll receive a personalised recovery plan specifically designed for your needs, outlining your pathway to full rehabilitation with clear milestones and expectations for each phase of healing.
  • Daily sessions during your hospital stay
  • Specialised exercises to rebuild strength safely
  • Movement techniques to protect your healing spine
  • Proven benefits for both short-term recovery and long-term mobility
